As the election season continues to pick up, the flood of fundraising appeals has escalated. I understand that this is an inescapable part of our modern political system, but the frenzied tone and overlapping asks from multiple campaigns can be disheartening — it’s unfortunate that this is such a central part of the landscape.
And recent news reminds us that, as always, when this much money is on the move, some bad actors will appear to siphon off a share for themselves. The Harris campaign highlighted this issue recently, calling out pseudo-Democratic “Scam PACs” like those clustered around PACtion and Bluefoot Political, while the Campaign Legal Center identified similar parasites on the Republican side.
The drive for campaign finance reform has seemed quieter in recent years, but the need for it has never been clearer; let’s hope we see some progress on this issue in the coming years.
